Japanese concern Toyota Motor, despite being the world’s largest automaker, is showing a level of conservatism and indolence in the context of competitors’ rapid transition to electric traction that worries investors. A number of statements by Toyota management on the eve of the annual general meeting of shareholders serve to calm the situation. For example, Toyota will start selling electric vehicles based on solid-state batteries as early as 2027 or 2028.
At least, that’s the Japanese automaker’s current plan, he noted Reuters. By 2026, Toyota expects to increase the annual sales volume of electric vehicles it controls to 1.5 million units per year. At this stage of development, Toyota specialists managed to solve the problems with the reliability and durability of solid-state batteries, and now the company expects to start mass production of cars based on them by 2027-2028.
Toyota’s traction battery milestone will be in 2026. By then, the company will offer electric vehicles with larger batteries that can travel up to 1,000 km on a single charge and can be recharged in less than twenty minutes. At the same time, such a traction battery will cost 20% less than the one installed in the existing Toyota bZ4X electric crossover.
Don’t ignore Toyota and batteries that combine lithium and iron phosphate (LFP). By 2026 or 2027, the company will equip a number of its electric vehicles with it, delivering a 20 percent increase in range compared to the current bZ4X (up to 510 km in the front-wheel drive version) and a 40 percent reduction in battery costs.
Toyota used to be a shareholder of Tesla and shared some know-how with it, but in the future the companies will switch roles in terms of sharing experiences. Toyota will adopt the body panel manufacturing method used by Tesla to simplify vehicle design. Large body parts are manufactured in one piece on huge presses, as at Tesla. At the same time, the degree of automation in automobile assembly will increase due to the increasing use of robots and digital technologies.
Another item on the list of innovations that Toyota intends to implement in production is to improve the aerodynamic parameters of its products. By partnering with rocket technology developer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the Japanese automaker hopes to lower the drag coefficient of its electric vehicles below 0.2. Among mass-produced electric vehicles, Lucid Air has a comparable value of this coefficient, while the outlines of the body of this sedan are quite harmonious in terms of proportions and design. Toyota expects to get closer to 0.1 or a little more.
Toyota intends to acquire from its partners elements of the powertrain platform for electric vehicles of more compact size, the use of which frees up space for cargo and passengers. Denso will receive support from Toyota to develop silicon carbide semiconductors that are more efficient when used in inverters. According to Toyota estimates, the cost of an electric powertrain could be reduced by up to 50% by switching to silicon carbide components.
